If you ever hear locals say “let’s go to John’s” or any other version of a suggestion to go party “at John’s”, they likely mean this place and not some expat’s apartment in central town. What is probably the smallest bar in all of town and definitely the smallest one anywhere near Town Hall square is the place to be.
It seats some 15 people comfortably, 20 might just fit, but every time I visit with friends it’s never crammed: when all seats are taken whoever’s in looking for a place will wander off. The strange thing: even though you come in late you might still be able to get a seat. Once you do, things start to happen.
Unlike some other places in town, the people who run this place don’t think blaring music is a good idea. Which is why a lot of conversations happen. WHJ only serves drinks, the list of which will not leave you disappointed. They also frequently have themed weekends when one drink or cocktail is sold at a special price – check the WHJ fb page for details.
Oh, and if you’re about to leave with a “I’ve got work in the morning”, “need to wake up early” or a similar type of “tomorrow’s an important day” excuse and the bartender offers you more drinks – stay. Not sure how they do it, but if they say you’re going to be alright in the morning, you will be. Tested thrice.
