When the world had hamburgers, hot-dogs and pizza, communist Poland had (only) their own fast-food, called zapiekanki. It’s an toasted open-face sandwich made of half of a baguette, topped with mushrooms, cheese and sometimes other ingredients. Traditionally it was served with ketchup but now we can get many different types of sauces as well as various ingredients.
In Kultowe Zapiekanki we can eat 27 different types of this Polish snack. There are some Polish combinations – like Góralska with bacon, smoked cheese, kiełbasa sausage and horseradish sauce, or Myśliwska with kiełbasa sausage, grilled pork loin, red onion and tomato – as well as ones inspired by world cuisine, like Napoletana, Alicante and Tyrol. There is also zapiekanka with kebab – the mix of the two most popular fast-foods in Poland, which is very funny to me. Something very Polish can be an “Antivegetarian” one, zapiekanka only with meat :).
It’s one of my favourite late night party snacks. It’s the food which all of my foreign friends love and remember for a long time. Definitely something to check out while visiting Poland!
P.S. If you go to Krakow, you can’t miss getting a zapiekanki from Bar Pod Okrąglakiem at Nowy square, these ones are the best and most famous ones in Poland!
