I escaped to Vietnam and Japan for about 10 days over Thanksgiving (yay for cheap flight deals!). Two good friends of mine had great travel tips – one had lived in Vietnam for two years, and the other went to visit her. And when I came back to DC, we were eager to share culture shock stories over Southeast Asian food at Doi Moi.
Doi Moi is a really fun restaurant. Chef Johanna Hellrigl mixes together tastes from different regions throughout Southeast Asia – Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. She uses what she learned traveling in these countries and from women living there to craft special dishes you can’t find anywhere else.
You can tell it’s fun before even trying these dishes. The gigantic windows allow people on 14th to peek into the open kitchen and trendy decor inside, from the bright white walls to colorful dishes and exposed brick. The restaurant was built into a historic DC building, which makes it that much more local.
My friends and I shared a few dishes and couldn’t even finish it all – the portions are filling. Definitely try the Brussels sprouts, curry, and a handcrafted cocktail! They also have a special shop for breakfast and lunch fare.
