Greek Deli is a no-frills lunchtime spot in Washington. It’s located on 19th St NW, just a couple blocks north of Foggy Bottom, but not quite Dupont. This is the hard-to-describe downtown area. It’s not a diner in the American sense – this place is take-out only. There is always a line here so I recommend going before 11:00 or after 13:00 to avoid the rush.
Once inside you’ll see the owners cutting fresh lamb in front of you. Everything is made to order. There are no inside tables – there are sometimes a couple of tables outside weather permitting – so it really is a take-out only place.
They have a simple menu: gyros, salads and baklava. If you’re looking for Greek groceries they also sell some inside, but the gyros is the go-to menu item and it is delicious. And please no special ordering. A gyro here is $10 – not street food prices but relatively inexpensive for a downtown DC lunch.
