Harold Black Washington DC

Harold Black – A cozy speakeasy

Located right next door to Aqua al 2 by Eastern Market, this speakeasy is accessible yet hidden. The door leads up to a stairwell where there is a dimly lit hallway and table. There, you’ll see a door with a sign that asks you to knock. You will then be added to a waitlist (usually no longer than a 15-20 minute wait; weekends are busier). Insiders tip: If you are tight on time, I suggest you make a reservation on their website in advance.

The bar is cozy and predominately lit by candlelight. The cocktails are excellent and the bartenders are happy to give suggestions. I would recommend the Penicillin (scotch, honey, spiced ginger and lemon) or the Corpse Bride (gin, red wine, génépy, absinthe, and lime). They also offer some lighter dishes, though I have never tried them.

The service can be slow, but as long as your intention is to enjoy your drinks and the ambiance, you will love this place!
