DC is more than the expensive fancy restaurants you’ll find in Georgetown, by the White House, or downtown. There are many affordable places with incredible food from all types of cuisines. Oohs and Aahs is located on U street, once the heart of black culture in Washington, and it has some of the best soul food you’ll find in the city.
Oohs and Aahs just recently opened a location on Georgia Avenue with more seating space but the original on U street is smaller with a few front-row seats to the cooking action. The restaurant is pretty small with the majority of patrons ordering for takeout. Two things you absolutely have to order are the fried chicken and the award-winning macaroni and cheese. My personal favorite on the menu are the short ribs which are ridiculously flavorful and fall off of the bone.
One of the best, or worst parts — depending on your self-control — of Oohs and Aahs is the late night menu. The restaurant is open until 10 PM during the week and until 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. If you find yourself venturing past Oohs and Aahs after 1AM, you will find a line out the door no matter what the weather is like. The food is just that good.
