T&U stands for Tosca and Una, two Mongolian friends who created this shop to showcase the goods of their native land. After meeting in college, both moved to North America and began speaking of starting a business together. The boutique sells handmade silk, cashmere and wool products that are made sustainably. Mongolia dominates 45% of the world’s cashmere market, and Tosca and Una favor women-owned companies that design and fabricate their own sweaters, scarves and coats.
While Mongolian goats come in white, grey, brown and beige, T&U suppliers also naturally dye their fiber, making garments in stunning colors as well as rich neutrals.
On my last trip, I couldn’t get over the color and softness of a delicious goldenrod wool overcoat. I’d pair it with their reindeer boots, not only beautifully made but soft and functionally warm. But for now only in my dreams, for none of this comes cheap, but these are pieces to be handed down to your grandchildren.
