Union Station is one of the few grand train stations that are still in operation. A lot of the ornate, grand train stations of years past have either been demolished or repurposed. Union Station has stood the test of time. In fact, it has just reopened in all its glory after a lengthy remodeling project.
There are actually some really good restaurants and great boutique shops inside. It’s a great place to meet with a friend for a drink as you just get into town. In the summer I love sitting in the front courtyard and looking at all the detail this train station has. It’s a much better place to enter DC than the dreaded beltway.
The Grand Hall is breathtaking. I feel like royalty entering. Past the grand hall are new shops and eateries. If you’re in DC you can take a day trip to Baltimore or Philadelphia which are less than 2 hours away and NYC in 3.5 hours!
