The Yervand Kochar Museum completely surprised me. I had grown up around traditional Armenian art, but Kochar's work felt like something new — bold, modern, avant-garde. He was a sculptor and painter who brought a European modernist spirit into Armenian art.
Kochar lived in Paris during a creative rise in Europe, but in 1936, he returned to Armenia, fully aware that the Soviet regime would creatively isolate him. He was later prosecuted, silenced, and never allowed to return to the West. Still, he chose to come back and contribute to his homeland's cultural life. That decision stayed with me - it's visible in every piece he created here.
The museum itself is small, situated right in the city center — between the Cascade Complex and the Opera and Ballet Theatre — easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. But I strongly recommend stepping inside. The museum tour won’t take more than an hour, but you'll discover a different face of Armenian art: abstract forms, surreal sculptures, and a creative spirit that defied the limits of his time.
