While winter may not be the most attractive season for traveling, Christmas period in Europe has an undeniable charm. For the last 3 years Zagreb was selected as the best Christmas market city in Europe (on the basis of travelers’ votes on the website European Best Destinations). Many locals are nagging because of the crowds, traffic jams and “kitsch”, but if you are not the grumpy type, why not simply enjoy some of the festive atmosphere?
My favourite location among all Christmas markets around the city is Ice park – an ice-skating rink made on the area of King Tomislav Square (which is basically a park). The main ice-skating area (with the surface of around 800m2) is just in front of The Art Pavilion, but what makes it special are the lanes that go all the way around the park, stretching to the statue of king Tomislav and surrounding the central fountain (all together more than 2000m2 of ice-skating area). Around the rink there are Christmas markets with typical food and drinks like glühwein, goulash, germknödel, as well as some local specialties. Every day there is a music program from 19:00 to 22:00, and you can read the program on the Facebook page of Ice park.
I love ice-skating here or just coming for a drink on the elevated platform by the rink with a nice view to the whole park, just to enjoy the atmosphere, which is particularly beautiful when the snow falls.
Open from December 1st till January 6th.
