Ah, the legendary Barbieri, since 1902, now called Nuevo Café Barbieri. Many have written about it and probably even more have written in it, as it was once presented as the center of Madrid’s bohemian life of artists and wanderers. Today it does not have that value anymore, as previous ideals are dispersing in modern fast-track life, but it still has the charm and it offers an inevitable comfort and kind simplicity.
Do not get me wrong; you can still run into one of the events they organize: recitals, exhibitions and especially concerts of singer-songwriters. What is even more peculiar and meaningful about it, is the contrast that the district of Lavapies has to offer. You can observe the typical Lavapies confusion on a nearby plaza and those big windows allow all the light that penetrates into the narrow streets of Lavapies to pass inside, making the place, mirrors covering the rest of the walls, look bright and cheerful. Seems well suited to its jazzy mood.
The coffee, in my opinion, is the best you can get in that area. On mornings or at noon you can grab a newspaper and a croissant and enjoy the peace, but in the evenings the place usually fills-up with interesting people and you and your friends won’t feel any different, having a beer to kill the thirst from a salty dinner and soothing it out with a gin & tonic.
