If you want a different experience from the famously busy district of Neukölln with its many bars and late-night mini markets, Idealpassage takes you on a historic walk: the hidden passage reveals a unique housing complex that was built in 1907/08 and served as a model for “social housing”, in which hot water, central heating as well as luminous courtyards were made available to the working class. Thanks to “Babylon Berlin” or other historic movies, you might know that such luxuries were not common for Berlin’s tenants at the beginning of the 20th century.

Still today, the Idealpassage is striking in all its details: the four connected courtyards were inspired by the stage design of the German opera “Der Freischütz” by Carl Maria von Weber. At the two entrances on Fuldastraße 55 and Weichselstraße 8, you can find more explanations and peek inside the wonderfully serene and green courtyards that the 116 apartments share. Please be aware that people are living there and respect the quiet.

After your little historic excursion, you can return to the many amenities in the neighboring streets: Indulge in some French patisserie from “Le Brot” on Fuldastraße or buy Swiss cheese at “Peppikäse” on Weichselstraße – and definitely try some of the street food on Sonnenallee, such as falafel sandwich at “Falfoul”.
