Tartine New York

Tartine – BYOB with French flavor

I used to walk by this tiny corner bistro and wonder why anyone would want to squeeze in there. There are only a few tables, and there’s almost no space to move. Well, consider me a convert that doesn’t mind getting close to my fellow New Yorkers because Tartine is now one of my favorite places to go for dinner.

The staff is really friendly and the prices are right up my alley (translation: not too outrageous). My favorite part is that they are one of the few BYOB restaurants in Manhattan. I swing by a wine store, pick out a nice bottle, and walk through the narrow streets of the West Village to get a table (or get in line – there can often be a wait).

The menu is filled with French classics like Mussels and Frites, and Steak Au Poivres as well as unique dishes like Spicy Chicken and Guacamole. I love their homemade gnocchi, and I’m also a sucker for anything with anchovies, so the Pissaladiere, a thin crust tomato & onion tart with Nicoise olives, parmesan cheese, Provence anchovies, is a good choice. You also can’t go wrong with one of their specials, including a daily seafood dish like in the photo above. Santé!
