In Thessaloniki, the local people grew up with the most common “street food” in town. We call it “sandwich” or pita gyros, and we are proud of it in Thessaloniki because we mostly have the biggest pita sandwiches in Greece.
Since I moved to the centre of Thessaloniki I’ve found that in my opinion the best pita place is “Psisou – Sta Karvouna”. Since 2005, they’ve been serving delicious dishes on Pavlou Mela street, near Lefkos Pirgos (White Tower). You can grab a bite there in the many tables of the store, or you can take it to-go.
They have a big variety of products so be sure that you will definitely find something to your tastes.
Apart from the classic pita bread, and the classic bread, you can also find tortilla bread, Arabic bread, and one of the signatures of the place, the “Choriatiki Thraka”, which is traditional kneaded bread filled up with your choice of ingredients, like gyros, souvlaki, soutzoukaki, or even traditional sausages, and different salads like tzatziki.
The prices start from 2.90€ for a pita gyros sandwich, to 3.90€ for a gyros in the Choriatiki Thraka. My personal favorite is the Arabic Bread gyros with the yogurt sauce, tabbouleh and fresh French fries.
