Last summer we opened up the Island – a studio, gallery and eventspace all in one. We are doing different exhibitions, pop-up stores or parties there and use it as a shared working space with two of our closest collaborators (Bureau Malte Metag and lokalikes).

The Island is located next to the “Hamburger Kunstmeile”, directly behind the Deichtorhallen (check the Deichtorhallen article) and close to the Oberhafen, which is a very interesting and upcoming part of Hamburg. Now that the summer season is starting, there are a lot of nice events coming up (only at the weekends). Just check the facebook fanpage for all latest news or to see pictures of the past exhibitions.  

Between Schanze and Grindel you’ll find a very beautiful old building that once was a hospital. Nowadays, there is a very beautiful café, the Hadley’s, located in the former emergency room area. Don’t worry, there is nothing left, that might remind you of a hospital. During the daytime the Hadley’s is a café with a fantastic breakfast and delicious cake.

In the evening it turns into a bar. They offer a great selection of wines. On every first Monday in a month you can go to “Monday meets Jazz”, a live Jazz night. You can check their homepage for their current program.

Another really nice offer is their “Abendbrot”. You can have the typical German supper with bread, cheese etc. together with some friends. We spent a beautiful birthday-party there, with many friends on a long table, covered with dozens of good things.

In summer you can enjoy the great outdoor seats in the garden. You’re sitting in the backyard, very green and calm. Just beautiful.

“Hasenschaukel” is a true gem among the St. Pauli bars! Located on a side street away from all the hustle and bustle on Reeperbahn, local ‘characters’ and tourists alike enjoy the quaint atmosphere at the ‘bunny swing’.

The interior is a blend of art nouveau and Gothic style combined with playful decorations such as dolls for lights, a fake fireplace, and a display cabinet with knitted bunny-shaped egg-warmers! The booths in the main room add a touch of American diner, but without the atmosphere. The former ‘Golden Backroom’ now serves as a smoking room.

Everything in this venue reflects a loving and thoughtful attention to detail providing a cozy atmosphere and intimate setting for the various acoustic shows put on by independent international artists. In addition, rotating DJs spin music such as Beat, Glamrock, and German classics.

The menu offers a great selection of daily vegetarian specials – handcrafted by the owner – such as quiches, enchiladas, and pasta, to name but a few. Specials on shots and long drinks, locally brewed beers, and the house special ‘Störtebeker‘ are available on a regular basis.

Visiting the Lehmitz is a great way to start off the night on Reeperbahn! This shabby-looking bar with its eclectic mix of patrons, and live entertainment is legendary! In a place where looks are not important, the ambience is created by the crowd and the bands.

You’ll find bikers, punks, bums, and ‘the average guy’ alike (average age mid- to upper 30s) clustered around the u-shaped bar under a large mural of Daisy Duck. The atmosphere is generally friendly and gets really loud when the band begins to play around 23:00. That’s when you’ll need to hold on to your drinks because the counter becomes the stage! It doesn’t matter whether it’s classic rock or punk – the important thing is that it’s loud!

The Coyote Parties every first Thursday of the month with ‘hotties’ dancing on the counter while serving drinks add another dimension to the art of bartending. Some of you will be happy to hear that smoking is allowed and for those who can’t do without some ‘physical exercise’, you can knock yourself out at the foosball table.

With its first tree planted in 1821, this green sanctuary currently comprises 47 hectares of Hamburg’s city center. Magnificent flowerbeds, well-tended lawns, and idyllic creeks provide a place of tranquility. Every section of the park offers different floral themes.

The Japanese gardens and tea house invite you to interrupt your stroll for a moment of relaxation. Families like to visit the enormous playground that may even have some fun in store for the ‘kid in you’, and some locals come here to play mini-golf, or with the oversized chess game. In the summer months, there are water shows with choreographed music and lights, public theater performances, and concerts at the music pavilion.

During the colder months, while the flora and fauna go into hibernation, you can reclaim a bit of summer at the conservatory of the University of Hamburg. Experience the arid desert climate at the cacti house, admire a great variety of fern, and tour the tropical house for some colorful blossoms of banana and cocoa plants; maybe you’ll even spot some terrapins.
