Ever since the first time my grandmother and auntie baked a gorgeous homemade cake for my fourth birthday, I have been obsessed with baking and baked goods. I absolutely adore the smell of cake and if I could bottle that scent I would! This is the reason why I love Ten to Three Café and Bakery, freshly baked goodies that are not only absolutely gorgeous, but also incredibly tasty.

I have to admit that I discovered the place a bit late, but before finally knowing where it was located, I kept seeing people with gorgeous bags carrying their goodies through the city. So, needless to say, I was elated when I first entered their shop in the center of Rotterdam; the place takes you into a fantasy, almost Alice in Wonderland-like. According to their website, their peculiar name was inspired by the last lines of the poem “The Old Vicarage, Grantchester” by English poet Rupert Brooke which immortalizes the great tradition of afternoon tea.

Their selection of cupcakes, mini cupcakes, macarons, cake pops, muffins and whoopee pies is amazing! My favorite are the macarons which come in a variety of flavors such as lemon, rose and chocolate. The cupcakes are also delicious and you should not leave this place without trying the cookies and cream cupcake because it is simply amazing. Also, they offer breakfast, lunch and as they call it ‘Madhatter’s Tea Parties’ which is a fabulous twist on afternoon tea. Ten To Three is simply pastry magic!

Around the corner from one of my favourite Italian restaurants Gusto, next to the new MGHO & MGHO20 shop and close to Maritime Museum is The Bagel Bakery.

They started years ago with the corner shop designed by AAdam architects. Then they mirrored the same design next door which makes it a twin connected through the open kitchen in the back. 

Go to Bagel Bakery for breakfast in the morning, lunch & high tea at noon, dinner in the evening and take away all day long. They have an excellent kosher Jewish/Mediterranean food fusion, all reasonable priced.

You can choose different types of bagels with delicious original toppings like hummus, Tarragon chicken salad or old cheese with truffle oil for example.

But they serve more than just bagels

Try the Bagel Burger or a large mezze if you are not too hungry with a nice wine. Why not share it with friends like a wonderful tasting of 9 different small dishes with home baked bread. Or what to think of Arook thayin: chicken rolls with relish, fresh soup and delicious salads.

Just check the daily specials on the chalkboard. For sweet toothed people; try their homemade cakes like the kosher Dutch apple crumble. Personally I love their fig cake with whipped cream .

Bagel Bakery has excellent coffee, organic champagne, good wines, modern interior, nice atmosphere, hip people and when the weather is good you can sit outside.

A place not to be missed when visiting Rotterdam.

Everytime when I go out for a run I pass the bakery Breggen Bakkers. Early in the morning I see the baker(s) working in the store and smell the freshly made bread. The sight of them working hard and the delicious smells keeps me going!

Breggen Bakkers is an old fashioned bakery with a lot of the bread, pastries, cakes and more made inside the shop. They only use Dutch wheat for the bread and are not afraid of trying something new. I usually buy the “voller volkoren” but the new “stoer volkoren” contains whole grain corns which is very tasteful.

In the store at the Groenendaal you can also enjoy a sandwich with a soda, coffee or tea at the lounge corner. It is not crowded at all so I take the time to enjoy my sandwich.

With the free WiFi, ask the baker for the password, I sometimes forget the time but luckily they have some delicious hazelnut cakes for my colleagues.
