I live in a neighborhood with many options to buy wonderful bread. But this one I think is even worth recommending as a city souvenir. Das Brot is a small business run by a lovely lady who makes sourdough bread “as it should be”. It is the most natural in town – at least in my experience – and that shows because days after you have brought it home it is still very tasty and feels fresh.
The shop itself is also very unique and lovely. You can sense the slow and loving process of bread being made behind a great wooden bookcase that displays the breads that are for sale that day. It is so artisanal, that they even sometimes have the skyline of Rotterdam on the crust, with the lovely colors that patience and a good oven can bring.
If you see the door closed, don’t be afraid to knock. I love that if they are not there or if they’ve just sold everything they have, they will leave a huge note in white letters. So if there is bread, grab it and enjoy it in a city picnic.
Pay attention to their opening hours and be prepared: their bread is so good it almost flies. If they are sold-out, you will see a lovely note by the baker scribbled in their door. They also sell other locally made delicacies and are soldiering on through the crisis – so help Rotterdam by helping its independent makers and doers!
