..and an even greater area for sitting outside when you can now enjoy warm days outside on the Radetzkyplatz, surrounded by flowers and plants in the so-called “Shani-Garten” (the Austrian word for outdoor dining area). 

But you can also enjoy the interior of this traditional Austrian tavern, with simple but cozy furnishing. Wild provides very good Austrian cuisine mixed with some modern culinary ideas. The prices are a bit high, but the atmosphere – indoor and outdoor – is quite special. The food is very tasty, there is a selection of very good wines!

At Wild you get an idea of Austrian “tavern-culture” without ending up in a gloomy smoky Inn where vegetarians are seen as people from outer space.

For the ones who appreciate healthy food I suggest a bio restaurant located on a side street just a minute away from the Votiv church.

They offer a wide selection of dishes for a healthy lifestyle as well as 2 daily menus (a fish/meat and a vegetarian). Menus include a base soup and a delicious salad from the buffet (beetroot, chickpeas, lentils or even millet are some of the many salad ingredients)! There is also a student menu version- a little smaller and cheaper. You can also taste their yummy home-made desserts! Menus are only in German but friendly staff will help you out.

To complete this home flavour, the interior is very cosy. It’s a small place in the “basement” of a house – its windows are tiny, wooden furniture in old style gives a character to the place. There isn’t one eating room but a divided space with some cosy corners. It’s a calm and relaxed place where besides eating you can also find some books on a shelf and read just like in your living room.

In the same street a few meters away there is a shop from the same owner selling ayurvedish and bio products. You find there from food stuff to hygienic products (also cosmetics). And also a bar with some food and snacks.

Rupp’s is not only the vegetarian/vegan answer if you want to try typical Austrian food, it is also a cozy Irish pub with a wide choice of hundreds of whiskeys.

Here you find vegan Gulasch, Wiener Schnitzel and Bratwürstel among typical veggie dishes such as sojaburger, salads, chili sin carne, and breads with various spreads.

Irish pubs are traditionally non-smoking, so is the Rupp’s! They have a smoking room, which also has a soccer table!

Rupp’s guests are always friendly and usually it’s easy to find a table soccer partner or drinking mate..oh by the way, they have a nice choice of beers (also organic ones!).

Welcome to a typical Austrian Gasthaus, where the waiters are friendly and the food is good.

They serve typical Austrian fare, also a choice of vegetarian dishes and some very good desserts. Prices are moderate and portions are big. The old fashioned parlors make you feel warm and cozy and the waiters treat you with a smile on their face (which is rare to find in Vienna).

This place might be a bit tricky to find, though it is worth to walk all the way down the Prater Hauptallee (4.4 km long pedestrian road) coming from Praterstern (metro: U2/U1).

If you don’t feel like having an one hour walk through the Prater park, take the bus 77A to the stop Gärtnerstraße (from one of this metro stops: U3 Kardinal-Nagl-Platz,U3 Schlachthausgasse, U2 Stadion und U2 Donaumarina).

Always on my mind, exploring Xu’s for the first time: We were on our way to a vernissage when my friend craved dim sum. This is how we came across Xu’s restaurant. I recall us wondering if the “meat” was real. You might want to laugh at us but since the menu said “beef” and “chicken” we were looking for aforementioned.

However, the food was promptly served, moreover very delicious, we couldn’t help but promise that we would be back. And we kept our word – many times.

I like it that Xu cooks every day, so I don’t have to remind myself what day of the week it is and if the restaurant is open or not. For lunch buffet there’s a wide choice of differing dishes available.

Even if you would never give up on consuming meat, food served here is so convincing that sometimes you’ll just give in to the vegetarian call.
