Certain places in Almaty feel more like a waking dream than reality, and Art Lane is precisely one of them. This is not merely a gallery but a magical art garden where you can quite happily lose yourself. Tucked away from the city's hum, it is a realm of fragrant roses, lovingly tended by the owner herself, where modern sculptures lie in wait around every corner as if playing a game of hide-and-seek.
The garden's true jewels are two glass cubes that shimmer like lanterns. One is a library for children, which on summer weekends fills with laughter during delightful art lectures and games. The other is a haven for architects, housing the creative minds of Metamorph Bureau.
But the main treasure resides in the gallery hall. Here, within cabinets that would look right at home in Dumbledore’s office, lies a magnificent collection of books on fashion, cinema, and calligraphy, many in foreign languages, all waiting for a curious soul to open them. Sometimes, this quiet space transforms, filled with the exquisite sounds of a baroque concert or the flickering light of a rare film, making the magic of the place feel wonderfully, tangibly real.
This magical garden holds deep stories. A plaque on the entrance arch shows the ghost of a house that stood here before. And the gallery building itself was once the home of Bauyrzhan Momyshuly, a legendary Kazakh hero of the Second World War and one of the most significant figures of the 20th century.
