Tucked in the southeastern foothills of the Ile-Alatau mountains, Birch Grove (Ak-Kaiyn) is one of Almaty’s most enchanting natural escapes. Named after the striking white birch trees that fill the area, this nature reserve offers a magical blend of tranquility, beauty, and wilderness — right on the edge of the city.
Though not widely known among tourists, Birch Grove is a favorite among locals for its seasonal charm. In spring and summer, the grove bursts into green life, filled with birdsong and fresh mountain air. Come autumn, it transforms into a golden sanctuary ideal for photography. Winter turns the grove into a snowy fairytale, perfect for serene walks or cross-country skiing.
Getting there is fairly easy—about a 20-minute drive from central Almaty, or via public transport followed by a short hike. However, the walk inside the grove and beyond can be challenging, especially if you venture deeper into the wilder trails. It’s a favorite spot for hikers, photographers, nature lovers, and even campers.
Marked trails, picnic areas, and eco-tourism spots are available, but the terrain becomes steep and rocky the farther you go. Sturdy shoes, snacks, and plenty of water are recommended. For more remote treks, a companion or local guide is advised.
Whether you're looking for a quiet escape or a strenuous mountain hike, Birch Grove offers an immersive experience in nature, just minutes away from city life. A true gem of Almaty, waiting to be explored.
