Tucked away in a basement near the lively Green Bazaar, CeCe Café is one of Almaty’s best-kept secrets. From the outside, the entrance is so modest you might walk past without noticing. Step inside, however, and you’ll find yourself in a space that feels worlds apart — buzzing, cozy, and filled with the aromas of sizzling spices.
The café’s open kitchen is the first thing that strikes you. Chefs move swiftly behind the counter, preparing bowls of steaming ramen, crispy fried bites, and fragrant curries. It reminded me of small eateries in Hong Kong, where the clatter of pans and the smell of soy and ginger are as much a part of the experience as the food itself.
The menu is compact but thoughtful, blending flavors from Japan, Vietnam, China, and Kazakhstan. Each dish feels carefully chosen rather than overwhelming. I tried the karaage chicken, marinated in Asian spices and fried to golden perfection, and the katsu curry, which paired crispy chicken cutlet with a rich, comforting curry sauce — both outstanding.
Beyond the food, CeCe has a vibe of its own. The décor is playful and eclectic: posters, warm lights, and quirky details create a casual underground feel. Young crowds gather here, laptops open or friends chatting over bowls of noodles, giving the café an energy that feels modern yet unpretentious.
If you’re looking for a spot that combines great food with a distinctive atmosphere, CeCe Café is a must — hidden away, but impossible to forget.
