Some restaurants are built, but the truly special ones feel as if they have been grown. Giardino is one of these. It resides in a very old building, and you can feel the years of careful, loving reconstruction in every detail, from the thoughtfully tended garden outside to the warm, inviting interior. This is a place that was brought back to life with immense patience and heart.
This spirit of loving tradition extends directly to the kitchen. The cuisine is Italian, guided by a chef who cooks not from a manual, but from the heart, using the treasured recipes of his nonna (grandmother). There is a particular focus on the robust and soulful dishes of Rome, which, alongside their special coffees and teas, make for a deeply comforting meal.
It is a wonderfully hospitable spot — cosy enough for a solo visit, yet spacious enough for a lively meal with family or friends. For me, one of the greatest charms is the terrace, which is adorned with beautiful paintings of the Almaty mountain peaks. They serve as a delightful quiz even for locals, who can sit and try to name each summit. It’s a perfect touch, blending the soul of Italy with a loving view of our own magnificent home.
