I visit Green Bazaar almost every week — it’s my favorite spot for fresh fruits and vegetables. The atmosphere is vibrant, a little chaotic, and full of life. You’ll find everything here: meat, fish, dairy, honey, spices, nuts, and even clothing, kitchenware, and stationery.
The best part? You can taste before you buy—from cottage cheese and honey to dozens of Korean salads. It’s a real gastronomic adventure.
For something uniquely Kazakh, try: Kumys (fermented horse milk), Shubat (fermented camel milk). Both are slightly fizzy and mildly alcoholic—start with a small cup! They might upset your stomach, but they’re worth trying for a truly local experience.
Don’t leave without buying lepeshka, a delicious flatbread baked in a clay oven. It’s best when warm and fresh.
Local tip: Go early to avoid crowds and get the best selection. Most vendors are friendly and happy to offer samples.
Green Bazaar is located in the center of Almaty and is closed on Mondays.
