If you're walking through the center of Almaty and want to take a small step back in time, stop by Kyzyl Tan. This store is located in one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city — a real piece of Verniy-era architecture, from when Almaty was still known as Verniy.
The building itself is worth seeing. It’s simple but full of character, with walls that feel like they’ve seen more than a century of stories. Some original interior details are still preserved, which gives you a feeling of that pre-revolutionary atmosphere. Unfortunately, the ceilings have been changed, which is a bit disappointing for architecture lovers — but even so, the place still holds a lot of charm.
Now it’s a fabric shop, but one with history. It’s interesting just to stand there for a moment and imagine how the city looked back in the day — when people walked past this building in long coats and horse carts rattled down dusty roads.
Kyzyl Tan is a quiet reminder that Almaty has layers, and not all of them are modern glass and concrete. Sometimes a quick visit to a simple store can be a doorway into the past.
