If you land in Almaty at 2 AM and you're starving, there’s one place I always recommend: Stolichny supermarket. Located in the city center, this large 24/7 supermarket is a true lifesaver for night owls and hungry travelers. You can find almost anything here — from groceries and snacks to fresh baked goods and even household items.
What I personally love is the deli section. They sell hot pastries, salads, and sometimes even full meals. You can ask the staff to heat up a pie or a pirozhok for you—super handy when you're craving something warm right away. It might not be the cheapest place in town, but it's definitely one of the most reliable late-night spots in Almaty.
If you're curious about local food, you can try kurt (salty dried cheese balls) or ayran (a savory yogurt drink). Both are available in Stolichny and give you a taste of Kazakh flavor on the go. Still, for a proper local meal, I’d say check out a traditional restaurant during the day.
Tip: Just a heads-up: they usually close for cleaning and maintenance early Monday mornings
