During summer time, I try to spend every single second outside, preferably close to the water. Fortunately, Hamburg is crisscrossed by an immense amount of canals that invite you to relax right by the waterside. One of my favorites is the area around Winterhuder Kai. It is very central and within walking distance from a subway stop. But still, once you are seated by the beautiful canal, watching the little boats and stand-up-paddlers passing by, probably enjoying an ice-cold drink or a little picnic, it's easy to forget that you are in the middle of a big city. Also, it’s one of the spots that has sun until sunset. That, however, also means that in the evenings, especially on the weekends, people love to have their parties right there..
But what makes the Winterhuder Kai even more special is that you can use it as a public swimming pool – the quality of the Alster water gets checked regularly and in this area there is not as much traffic as in other parts so it is a very popular spot to refresh yourself in the water – if you need to cool down a little bit, just dive right in!
