That’s right, POMMES: the German word for hot chips, pomme frites, fries, however you like to call them, the classic thick-cut potatoes deep-fried in oil can be interpreted in any which way, and depending on your city, country or culture, can be presented to you in various shapes or forms.

Let’s take Germany: the classic fries made their way to Germany apparently during the 19th century. In today’s era, your fries not only come with the typical mayonnaise, ketchup or both, but in many places can be combined with the street-food snack curry sausage (currywurst): a sausage with a spicy ketchupy sauce not only very popular in Germany, but also invented in East Berlin in the 1950s. Rumour has it that Herta Heuwer created the sauce from ingredients she had been introduced to by British soldiers in Germany.
