Astoria Park New York

Recreation between the bridges

""Astoria Park" is one of New York City's public parks, an invaluable resource. It's the largest recreation space in my neighborhood - am I lucky or what?"

In a city where many residents live in tiny apartments, New York's public parks are an invaluable resource. Astoria Park is the largest recreation space in my neighborhood, and I feel lucky to consider it my backyard substitute.

Astoria Park is situated right on the East River, nestled between the Triboro and Hell Gate Bridges. I usually get there via the bike path that extends all the way along the west side of Queens. In Astoria Park, the bike path meets the shore of the East River, where I like to stop and admire the views of Manhattan and Randall's Island.

Astoria Park boasts a number of recreation facilities, such as an outdoor track, skate park, tennis and basketball courts, playground, and one of the city's largest public pools. I love going to the pool in the summer to cool off and swim laps in their Olympic-sized lanes. The pool is amazingly clean and well-maintained. This is largely due to their great staff and pool rules, which I recommend reading on their website before you go.

When I just want to chill out and read a book, the best place is on the big lawn beside the Hell Gate Bridge. Its the sunniest spot, and you'll see many Astorians relaxing, picnicking and sun-bathing.
