From the world's busiest bridge — the George Washington Bridge which carries more than 100 million vehicles per year and is 1,450m long at the north—to the site of Dutch construction around 1625 at The Battery at the south, the 13 mile Hudson River bike route along the east bank of the Hudson River is the most heavily used bike trail in the USA.
En route, the path passes Battery Park City, Chelsea Piers, the USS Intrepid 'floating museum' (a WW2 aircraft carrier), the cafés around 72nd Street, then the popular Upper West Side, Harlem, Washington Heights and finally, Inwood and The Cloisters.
It may be an all day event as you will be tempted to leave the path at any of those sites for further exploration and sustenance.
Though car free its entire length, it is not without dense bicycle traffic and pedestrian conflict, especially around Chelsea Piers, the 42nd Street tourist attractions and the boat basin at 79th Street, soon to be completely reconstructed.
Chelsea Piers is as good a place as any to begin, but wherever you acquire your bicycle, head west until the Greenway prevents you from splashing into the Hudson River.
