The newest addition to the Long Island City waterfront is the modern Hunter's Point Library. If you are a fan of books, architecture, skyline views, or just simply want a quiet place to contemplate, you will love this spot!
The building is modern, bright and airy. Huge windows span multiple floors to showcase the iconic Manhattan view across the East River. The building has a rather small footprint, and uses multiple levels to accommodate books and reading areas. Books are categorized per floor, with a separate genre on each level. There are plenty of tables, chairs and seating areas, as well as a quiet glass-walled room and a long table with outlets for personal computer use. My favorite floor is the adult non-fiction floor, where rows of comfy chairs are lined up in front of the huge main window. What a special treat to read while sitting across from the Empire State Building!
The library is free to visit, but a library card is required to use the computers and borrow books.
The library is located on Long Island City's waterfront, adjacent to Gantry State Park. This area is best accessed by the East River Ferry which docks in two locations on the waterfront. While you're here, you might enjoy also walking along the well-developed waterfront. There are plenty of benches, chairs, and even hammocks for your relaxation.
