In 1970 NYC hosted the first Pride Parade. Then in 2019, for the first time in history, 'World Pride' was held in NYC.
This year (2024) during June (and, in fact, every June), for this year's fifty-third anniversary of the ‘founding’ event of Gay Pride --- the Stonewall Riot of 1969 --- New York City will again host its Pride March on June 30th, an astonishing river of people that flows down Fifth Avenue to Greenwich Village, taking many hours to pass any given parade watcher. It’s often led by Dykes on Bikes — many chapters of the club of motorcycle riding lesbians — and is the largest LGBTQIA march in the world with more than 500 unique entrants and more than 100 floats.
Registration is required to participate, and it goes without saying that accommodation needs to be arranged very early (‘ASAP’, in America’s world of acronyms). Begin your research at a website created by the Stonewall bar itself here.
The parade kicks off at 11:00 from the corner of Fifth Avenue and 25th Street.
There is no doubt that it is a really big show. So big that if you are NOT interested, you should consider adjusting your schedule so that you do not have to compete for space in restaurants, theaters, museums and even on sidewalks and trains. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities listed on the website, should you want to contribute.
