On the north end of Gantry Plaza State Park stands a large illuminated sign bearing the name Pepsi-Cola. This sign is extremely well known by many of the locals, though it is not as well known by tourists. The park is located in has recently been renovated and expanded. It’s very easy to get to this park by ferry, or off of the 7 train in Long Island City. Even without the sign, the park would still be worth a trip across the river.
The sign has stood here since 1936! Originally, this area of Gantry Plaza State Park used to be home to a Pepsi bottling plant, which closed in 1999. The building was demolished but the iconic sign was placed inside the park. At night, the sign glows red and reflects off the surface of the river reminding passersby of what used to be there. This is the perfect place for a selfie and the view of the skyline of the city is unbeatable!
