Chez Adel, tucked in a small street just behind the Canal St Martin, is truly a one-of-a-kind bar. Mainly because Adel has been the owner and bartender for God knows how long, and no one masters his art better than him. The decor is that of a 50s, old wooden cabin, with randomly placed statues, a huge fresco in the back, and many more knick-knacks that just make you want to sit there and fantasize about Adel’s life.
Sometimes, I couldn’t tell you when and how often Adel invites musicians to come play the various instruments he has laid around the bar. They’re not proper concerts, more like jam sessions that seem to just “appear” and “disappear” on random nights. What makes me love this place is the old popcorn machine, the shells that serve as ashtrays outside, the weird decor and the little terrace that goes around the bar. Adel is also quite the character, whose incredible tenure is well worth the pop-in. Just watch out that he doesn’t change the price during the course of the night (a little trick he likes to play more for fun than for gain).
Also, the number one rule in this bar is to be PATIENT. You’ll see for yourself that Adel has been around for a while, so take the time to enjoy the scenery when ordering your drink, because it might take a while for him to prepare.
