Porto breathes culture through all of its new and old pores, as it tries to adapt to the new search of contemporaneous events. These events have vast options of where to take place, which tend to increase due to the large demand while also conserving some of its beautiful and traditional spots. One of these being, without any doubts, this historical theater Teatro Sá da Bandeira.
Built in 1855, “Sá da Bandeira” theater is located in the street that gives it its name, in the very center of Porto. This place has such a characteristic atmosphere that it leaves no one indifferent, which leaves me quite comfortable to say that every Porto local has some dear memory of an event that occurred there.
For many years it housed “revistas”, a theater play consisting of criticism of the society levels and politics, together with humor and music. These theater plays are still present, but with less emphasis. The new crowds demanded rock concerts, psychedelic parties and special events. “Sá da Bandeira” knew how to answer that and to offer these events like almost no other place in the noble city or Porto.
Bands like Gotan Project, dEUS, Groundation, Alice Russel and Cinematic Orchestra passed through this theater, for the delight of themselves and their audience. Electronic festivals even made the structure vibrate until sunrise. The vampire prom, Fantasporto, had its most appreciated nest here…
Simply, this theater is one of Porto’s cradles, and it’s really worth checking their agenda.
