If in the evenings (especially weekends) you happen to pass by the oldest hotel in Rijeka, Hotel Continental, you may be surprised by the number of people drinking and enjoying their night. Right in front of the hotel, on the square called Titov trg, there is an open space with benches where people, usually teenagers and young adolescents, gather to get tipsy before moving on to some club, or they stay there all night. Among the locals, the square is called Kont after the Hotel Continental next to it, and if you tell a local to meet you at Kont, they will know where to come.
If you would like to get some company, feel free to find a group that seems approachable because very often people of Rijeka are very welcoming and love to meet foreigners!
Right across the street there is a small market (Smiljana - an urban legend) where you can stock up on goodies, and the public toilet is nearby. Even though most folks decide to use the whole city as their toilet, don’t be like them. ;)
At the same time, keep an eye on beggars and your stuff close to you. You never know who can snitch your things while you’re too busy having a nice time!
