As a Spotter exploring Rotterdam’s hidden treasures, I couldn’t resist visiting Hidden Gem, a new pop-up restaurant tucked away in the creative M4H area. True to its name, the spot is literally hidden, when I invited friends, they were skeptical after parking in front of an industrial building. But around the corner, on the waterside, a small door revealed the entrance to an unforgettable dining experience.
Reservations are a must; no walk-ins. This innovative restaurant is the brainchild of Kelvin Lin, who combines his love for Asian cuisine with a platform for other talented chefs to shine. The concept feels like a laid-back food court, with one menu card showcasing dishes from several “startups.” Current chefs include Selin Altuntas (Mimoza Ottoman cuisine), Emiliano Giorgi (Ris8tto Italian cuisine), Terence Keyzer & Tijmen Pennarts (Tête a Tête street food), Niels van der Zijde (pizza Roffa) and Sietze Kalkwijk (Soda Pop Shop)..
The food? Simply divine. We sampled a mix of dishes, and every bite exceeded expectations. Highlights for me were the fried Brussels sprouts and the flavorful mushroom and chicken dish.
The interior surprises with its warm, cosy atmosphere, small tables, an open kitchen, and a split-level design offering views of the harbour lights. Hidden Gem is the perfect spot to discover new flavors and support Rotterdam’s up-and-coming culinary talents. If you’re seeking something truly unique, this is the place to go.
