The island of Södermalm in Stockholm is one of 7 neighbourhoods in Stockholm. It is also my "home island". More than 100K people are living on this island. Next to Södermalm is Old Town (Gamla stan) on the north side. Going back 200 years or so, this island was pure countryside with farms and poor people.
Today, Södermalm is a vibrant part of the city. In the last 10 years, a lot of quality restaurants, bars and shops have opened here. It is a popular place to go to for people watching, eating good and to be in the pulse of everything. If you want, you can walk around the island, it will take about 3h to do so, but you will have great views all the way. On this island you'll find the popular SOFO of Stockholm, which has plenty of local shops, bars and restaurants.
There are many parks to visit, and in the summer, many of them also have food services. The main street is Götgatan, at least if you are looking for food, drinks and shopping, and it will take you from the very south to Old Town. Wander off from the main streets and enjoy the views. Head towards Vitabergsparken for a more relaxing atmosphere. The park was built in the late 1800's. Or go down to Hornstull and visit the popular outdoor market, there are a lot of food trucks and things to buy. Spend the day here, eat well, walk a lot and have fun!
