Behind the prisonwall
In 1949, a psychiatric observation clinic opened on Gansstraat in Utrecht, where suspects were checked for mental health issues. The prison finally closed in 2018, and since then, the building has taken on a whole new vibe.
These days, you’ll find some fun new uses here, a live-action “prison escape” game with actors, and, best of all, a super relaxed restaurant called Bar Barak.
From Thursday to Sunday, you can drop by for lunch or dinner. Grab a spot on the terrace hidden behind the old prison walls, or head inside to the cozy dining room. The menu is full of small plates with lots of different flavors to try, and even the wine list is worth reading: funny, spot-on, and without all the fancy jargon.
Oh, and don’t miss the excellent bakery right next door.
