Neighborhood pub by volunteers
Café Averechts is a hidden gem that even many local Utrechters don't know about. It is a pub and restaurant hidden in the scenic residential Vogelenbuurt. They host intimate concerts multiple days of the week, especially the music nights on Friday evenings are great. All events are free.
Another great thing is that they have a vegetarian/vegan restaurant every Sunday evening. With only 15 euros for a three-course dinner, it's a bargain. Check out their Instagram for the weekly set menu. Reservations are required to limit food waste.
This cozy café run by volunteers has been around since the 80s and still exudes a typically 80s mindset and atmosphere. However, this doesn't mean that it's old-fashioned! On the contrary, it still attracts an eclectic mix of Utrechters of all kinds, young and old, Dutch and international. Everyone can feel welcome here.
It is one of my favorite spots in the city because it is one of the few places where it's totally normal to sit at the bar and start a conversation with people of all ages that are sitting next to you. Some of the regulars have the most unbelievable life stories!
