Right in the middle of the most beautiful part of the Oudegracht, and with that the most beautiful part of the city, amongst many tourist traps, lies one of my favorite eateries of Utrecht: Kartoffel. This is by no means a fine dining establishment. Expect German food in it’s most basic form, but executed very, very well.
The food is cheap (but really), and so are the beverages (especially if you go German and order a liter of beer). The crew is really friendly, and the atmosphere – whether it’s indoors in the monumental wharf cellar (which are unique for Utrecht), or outdoors on the wharf terrace – is special. The restaurant calls itself unpretentious, simple and solid, and that’s exactly what it is, in the best way possible.
If you’re not into traditional German food (big chunks of meat, cabbage, potatoes, etc.), stay clear.
