Sourdough bread is one of the quintessential hipster — or, as we call it, Havermelkelite — products. A loaf often goes for crazy prices, and the queues for trendy bakers are reaching absurd lengths. At the same time, I find good bread very important. Luckily, in my town, you can still get amazing bread for somewhat affordable prices at KEEK.
KEEK stands for Kunst En Eerlijke Koffie (art and fair coffee) and started out as a lunch room on the Twijnstraat, serving fair trade coffee and lunch while showcasing art from local artists. Over the past 15+ years, they have expanded to two more locations, including a professional bakery. My favourite location is their shop on the Oudegracht, where I buy my bread a few times a week. As the bread provides the main substance of the lunch of me and my kids, you could call it a cornerstone of our house hold. And for a reason! They sell amazing brown and blonde loaves, along with sweet and savory delicacies and, of course, good quality coffee, amongst other things.
