This is one for the architecture lovers. A true Utrecht icon and a UNESCO world heritage of huge significance for the city. This house was designed in 1924 by famous designer Gerrit Rietveld, known for his famous chair, for the widow Truus Schröder-Schräder and her children, who lived there until her death in 1985.
The house, including the interior, is designed completely in the Dutch De Stijl style, which also inspired Mondriaan. If you're interested in architecture and happen to be in Utrecht, don't miss out on the opportunity to experience this exceptional house. It is definitely worth paying the entrance fee and going on the tour, as the interior is even more amazing than the exterior. You will get some funky protective shoes, and while you wander through the house, they will surely bring a smile to your face as you discover all the surprising little details incorporated in it.
During peak season, I would recommend to book ahead. It is open almost every day, and there are big discounts for students, so bring your student card!
When you're done, go for a beer at Jan Primus (great brown pub), a coffee at NOEN, or a pizza at Pizza Beppe Oost – all great places!
