First of all, let me clarify that this spot is not located in a single location. You will find it in several places around the city. Let me also tell you that it is art, and as art we like it a lot. So what is it?
It’s a street art version of the telecom cubicles. We call these boxes KAFAO (ΚΑΦΑΟ in Greek) and they are basically the Greekized pronunciation of the German acronym KV (Ka-Fau) which comes from the word “Kabelverzweiger” meaning “cable distributor”. These boxes are usually grey and several artists decided to paint them, giving them personality while beautifying the city. There are many different ones since each artist is different, capturing their personal style on the box. Of course, they are not limited to the centre of Athens, since other municipalities followed the example of the centre afterwards. For example, you will find excellent ones in the neighbourhoods of Alimos and Paleo Faliro.
You won’t have a hard time coming across some of them on your route, as they are scattered everywhere. You can start with perhaps the most famous one that is pinned in this article, at the junction of Ermou and Voulis streets.
