My internship at Spotted by Locals

Hi! My name is Afaf and I am in my last year of Liberal Arts and Science at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. In the last four months, I’ve done my internship at Spotted by Locals and I have learned plenty since.

My responsibilities at Spotted by Locals entailed managing social media and creating content by writing articles. My role was to select certain articles and Spotters and post them on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. I also had to do checks-ups to maintain the quality of the articles and keep them up-to-date. But writing articles from scratch was one of my favorite things to do. If you’ve read articles about vintage shops, budget traveling and swimming spots on the Rotterdam blogs, chances are you’ve read mine. I hope you enjoyed reading them!

There were a few difficulties I faced during my time at Spotted by Locals. I had no idea that selecting articles for Twitter or selecting pictures for Instagram was challenging. This mostly had to do with finding articles and pictures that were suitable and within the Spotted by Locals spirit. I also had to get used to writing for an organization like this. Bottom line is, I struggled between finding the perfect combination of mixing my (writing) style with the style that is expected.

One of the most beneficial aspects of doing an internship at Spotted by Locals is flexibility. You can manage your time pretty easy as your working place or office can be anywhere you want it to be. The only thing you need is your laptop and a good WiFi connection. The rest is up to you.

Overall, I’ve learned a lot and had a wonderful time. You will learn so much about over-tourism and so many underrated spots in different cities, you could even make a bucket list based on the spots written by Spotters. That’s why I want to end this article by the following: everyone who has a knack for social media skills, who loves traveling and writing articles should definitely consider doing their internship here!
