There’s something enchanting about autumn in Hamburg. As the cold air settles in and the trees turn vibrant shades of red and gold, the city takes on a cozy charm that’s hard to resist. Our Spotter, Sebastiana, loves this time of year, when the city feels both vibrant and beautiful, offering endless escapes for those who know where to look. Sebastiana invites us to experience her perfect autumn day in Hamburg. From nature, culture and cozy retreats that bring Hamburg’s autumn magic to life.

Sebastiana: “When summer slowly takes its leave and the days get fresher and the leaves more colorful, I love to start the day comfortably without feeling guilty for it. I love to stay in bed for a little while and read a book with a delicious hot coffee in my hands.”

But especially when it’s one of the sunny autumn days with its beautiful colours I don’t stay indoors for too long – a very popular autumn activity for us is mushroom picking – which works particularly good in the Sachsenwald or Niendorfer Gehege (but – as I also work as a doctor – please only do so if you really know how to identify edible mushrooms!  Alternatively, there are many guided tours you could book). After a walk in the forest, I like to warm up with a delicious piece of cake and a hot chocolate, for example in the cozy Café Deike and maybe get creative (like carving pumpkins with friends or painting ceramics – for example at Porzellanfräulein or at Studio 1200°).

For me, fall is also the time to indulge in the city’s cultural program. I love going to the theatre (e.g. Schauspielhaus or Thalia Theater), the cinema (e.g. Passage Kino – our oldest cinema still in operation or Zeise Kino) or an art exhibition (e.g. Affenfaust Galerie). If I’m still motivated to plunge into Hamburg’s nightlife in the evening, this time of year is perfect for me as a Christmas lover, as the first mulled wine stands start opening. How about a maritime Christmas market right by the harbour (StrandPauli)?

To round off the evening, I head to one of Hamburg’s clubs for a few dance moves. I really like Nachtasyl, a club that is part of my favourite theatre, Thalia Theater, and it´s not only a great place for the electronic music lovers out there. To recover from all the hustle and bustle, some wellness is a must. Admittedly a little out of the city center, but definitely worth a visit, is the Vabali Spa Hamburg – here you can enjoy a wonderful Balinese-style sauna area and really calm down.
