Building something in Cologne is never easy... as soon as one digs a hole, one finds something from ancient times and has to stop and wait until the archaeologists have done their job.
(this time they found: stones from a wall from the Roman empire, parts of a tower from medieval times, a bomb from the second world war, etc.) But finally we’ve got a new favorite spot: The ‘Rheinboulevard’.
In the end, these are also only some steps, like any other set of steps and boulevard all over the world, but the mixture of the view, the mood and the people make all the difference.
So do it like we do : make an appointment with your friends ‘at the steps’, on the way to it (tram/bike/on foot) grab some cold beer from the kiosk (yes, this is common and legal in Cologne…) and chill there any time during the day.
And while sitting there and having a chat, watch the freighters, big and small boats or even rowers, passing by. The Steps themselves are like an outdoor pub, where all kind of people come together: families, small groups, just two friends or colleagues meeting after work...
But the best part, for sure, is the view: on the opposite side, you have a perfect panorama view of what thousands of tourists try to capture on pictures: the old city and the Dom.
And don’t miss it when the sun goes down behind the ‘small’ church...
