It is blasphemous to visit Switzerland and not take back chocolates, isn't it? Shopping at artisanal chocolate shops might break the wallet, but if you had to visit just one such shop in Geneva, it would be Favarger. Founded in 1826, it is one of the oldest chocolatiers in town and also a local favourite.
From the famous chocolate slabs to carefully crafted pralinés, Favargers products are all excellent. My favourites to buy at Favarger are the Pavé de Genève (resembling the cobblestones in Geneva's old town, these are made of cocoa butter and dusted with dark cocoa powder), and the Les Bouchées (bite-sized treats made of milk/dark/white chocolates and rice krispies/corn flakes etc). Their hot chocolate is also an excellent companion on a cold day.
I admit I do buy a little treat every now and then from here - mostly the pavés and the white chocolate and pistachio bouchées. They also have workshops if you want to try chocolate-making.
Hot tip: If you are looking to bulk buy chocolate without breaking the bank, head to the second floor of Coop City at Fusterie/Manor/Migros at the main train station. They regularly have chocolates on sale. Look for brands like Kägi, Ragusa, Munz, Villars, Halba (store brand of Coop) and Frey (store brand of Migros, and the same chocolate distributed aboard Swiss air flights). These are Swiss and are fantastic for a fraction of the price of fancy chocolates.
