Visiting a street market is a must in London for locals and visitors alike. Chatsworth market is my go-to on Sundays that I want to avoid long queues and escape the crowds. A short walk from Homerton’s Overground station, I find this laid-back market a great place for people watching and a relaxing stroll.
Despite being one of London’s longest high streets, Chatsworth Road is fairly quiet on weekdays, coming to life usually on weekends. Unlike many high streets, it has largely resisted the influx of chains, instead hosting a vibrant mix of independent small businesses, from old-fashioned shops that offer household essentials to boutique wine merchants, artisan bakeries, independent small restaurants and specialty coffee shops, which give it a strong community feeling.
Every Sunday, stalls stretch between Dunlace Road and Lockhurst Street, selling handcrafts and fresh produce, including artisan bread, cheese and organic meats, as well as street food. Foodies can indulge in a variety of delicacies from around the world, from Turkish Gözleme and Greek Souvlaki to Scottish Toasties and Vietnamese Banh Mi, among others.
Set a bit further afield, the Chatsworth market has not been overrun by tourists. It attracts fewer visitors than some of the buzzier East London markets, making it a perfect spot to soak a more local vibe.
