The City of London has a number of ancient green spaces, usually next to churches (such as the St Botolph without Bishopsgate Gardens), or the former plague burial grounds of Bunhill Fields. As the City has newly expanded eastwards, most of the buildings are glass and steel towers that give this ancient quarter the feeling of being in a mini Manhattan.
All the more delightful then to come upon a pocket of new green space, so new it isn't even formally on the map. The development at Goodmans Fields has a number of welcome amenities, such as a new branch of the arts cinema Curzon and a branch of Tian Tian Market for all your Asian grocery needs.
But walk to the east side of Goodman's Fields and you come to a playful green square, complete with benches, metal sculptures, and a play area. It's a great spot to sit for a moment amid the steel and glass and catch your breath, or enjoy a sandwich in the sun.
