Nestled in the heart of Kingsland High Street in Dalston, the iconic Rio Cinema has been a key part of Hackney’s cultural scene since the 1930s. A proper treasure for cinephiles, regularly featuring art house film screenings and hosting a range of film festivals, including London’s Kurdish Film Festival, Fringe!, and Queer Film Festival, amongst others, Rio is one of the very few independent cinemas left in the British capital.
The Art Deco auditorium, with its curvy shape and long red velvet curtains, takes the visitors on a journey back in time. Perhaps the seats are less comfy when compared to the premium screens found in multiplexes and chained cinemas, yet Rio seems to have gained a place in the heart of East Londoners for its unique character and atmosphere that it offers. That said, a 30-seat second screen has been introduced recently, featuring leather seats and a cocktail bar. However, if you are after a more authentic experience, my tip is to opt for the screenings in the main auditorium. The bar at the foyer offers a good selection of drinks and cinema snacks, making it a good place to hang out before or after the film.
Run as a non-profit charity, it offers discounted tickets to annual membership holders.
